One can find numerous candidates for the title of “world’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a new book, however, that honor should go to a automated timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, constructing a modest trading ship required around ten lumberjacks laboring over three months,” writes the author. “With wind-powered sawmills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be manufactured within a week.”
Owing to their speedy automated cutter, which converted logs into planks using virtually no human effort, the Dutch were able to construct vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, economic and artistic supremacy across the continent and the globe.
