The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
